URBAN PLAYGROUND

A plain, concrete parking pad was transformed into an urban oasis and secret garden in Northwest DC. The intent was to provide a space for quiet enjoyment and seasonal tinkering, well-defined by trees, shrubs, a clover lawn, and pathways. Homeowner incentives through the city's Riversmart Homes program and tree planting by Casey Trees helped provide a financial boost to the project, as well as a water bill reduction.

Container plantings lend opportunities for seasonal display and experimentation, while the incorporation of a raised bed provide space for growing vegetables and cut flowers. The flower theme also continued to the front yard, maximizing every square inch of the property with plantings.
